Malaysia rollout for Mitsubishi ASX
REVVING UP: Production set to begin in January
MITSUBISHI Motors Corp (MMC) plans to produce its ASX, a compact sport utility vehicle (SUV), in Malaysia for the local market.
According to MMC, the move is aimed at expanding its operations in the passenger vehicles segment.
"In order to enhance the company's presence in Malaysia, boosting operations in the passenger vehicles market is crucial.
"The first step towards this goal is to boost sales of the highly-acclaimed ASX by switching from the current Japanese-made import to built-in-Malaysia model," MMC said in a statement on its website.
Mitsubishi's vehicles are currently imported and sold by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), a distributor of MMC.
It said Tan Chong Motor Assemblies Sdn Bhd has been contracted to assemble the cars.
"Production is set to begin in January 2014 and sales of the ASX are set to begin from February through MMM's sales network," MMC said.
MMC, through MMM, first started selling the Triton pick-up trucks in 2006 and the Pajero sports mid-sized SUV in 2009. This was followed by ASX in 2010 and the Mirage global compact in 2012.
