Prasarana supports plan on public transport use
KUALA LUMPUR: Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd, the country's leading provider of public transport, welcomes the public network initiatives under the 2014 Budget, including the RM62 million allocation to provide more park-and-ride facilities.
It, however hopes that more land would be allocated for the construction of the facilities to promote greater use of public transport.
Prasarana group managing director Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar said the development of park-and-ride facilities at LRT and KTM Komuter stations will have a strong impact on efforts to increase the public transport mode share.
"Indeed, we need more park-and-ride facilities to encourage the public to switch from driving private vehicles to using public transport. The trend is changing but we strongly feel it needs to change more," he said in a statement.
Prasarana opened a six-storey park-and-ride complex in February this year with 1,260 parking bays at the Gombak LRT station. It will open a similar facility with 1,140 parking bays at the Ampang LRT station next year.
Shahril said the RM28 million allocation to build last-city terminals, upgrade bus stops and provide drop-and-ride facilities augurs well with efforts to encourage more commuters in cities and towns to use public transport.
