Firefly upbeat on JB-Pekanbaru route
PEKANBARU, Indonesia: Community airline Firefly is optimistic its Johor Baru-Pekanbaru route launched in August will promote
investment and tourism between Johor and Riau, Indonesia.
Firefly chief commercial officer Azman Ahmad said response to the thrice weekly fights, with fares from RM99, has been good, with ongoing promotions involving travel agents and hotels.
"Riau, one of Indonesia's main producers of oil palm, oil and gas, is a destination of choice for Johoreans for investment, shopping and beauty treatment especially in Pekanbaru," he told 23 Johorean journalists accompanying a joint mission by Firefly, Tourism Malaysia and Johor Tourism Department here recently.
Johor has close historical ties with Riau, and with attractions like Legoland, Johor Baharu is the latest medical tourism destination for Riau residents, he said.
The airline may offer daily flights on the Johor Baru-Pekanbaru route if there is sufficient demand, and is already offering attractive flight and hotel packages in association with Grand Hawaii Hotel here.
"We are extending our partnership with the Johor state government and Tourism Malaysia to promote the route to travel agents and hotels throughout the year because we are confident of a good response considering the short flying distance and reasonable prices," he said.
Meanwhile, the hotel's general manager Achmad Irawan said he expects 10 to 15 per cent more guests with the special packages.
The three-star hotel on Jalan Gatot Subroto in the city's centre offers rooms from 288,000 rupiah, and is just 50m. from Pekanbaru Mall and 20 minutes' drive from the Sultan Syarif Kasim II airport, while a spa and airport shuttle service are being planned, he added.-- Bernama
