klia2 on target for May take-off
SEPANG: The main terminal building of Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) — the country’s first purpose-built hybrid airport — is 99 per cent complete and is on track to open for business on May 2 2014.
“We are confident that klia2 will commence operations on the targeted opening date,” Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi told newsmen yesterday after presenting fit-out guidelines to klia2’s retail lot tenants and certificates of recognition to the top 10 operators.
The terminal will be managed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the country’s dominant airport manager.
MAHB chief operating officer Datuk Abd Hamid Mohd Ali said overall, klia2 is 94 per cent complete, leaving only finishing works to the main terminal and the final layer of taxiway pavement.
Nevertheless, the airport operator is already planning for klia2’s opening day and expects 172 retail outlets to be up and running by then.
MAHB senior general manager of commercial services, Faizah Khairuddin, said 33 per cent of the successful tenderers for the retail lots were completely new to the local airport commercial environment.
Bumiputera traders will make up some 40 per cent of the retail outlet owners and the rest will be a mix of local and international brands familiar to our target segments,” Faizah said.
