GEORGE TOWN, Penang: Stellar Retail Sdn Bhd, the master franchisee for Debenhams in Malaysia, is set to introduce another Debenhams' store in the Klang Valley next year.
Stellar Retail managing director Andy Jackson said since 2008 the group had invested about RM13 million including its third store in Gurney Paragon, Penang, the first outside Klang Valley.
He said Debenhams was keen to increase its presence in Malaysia particularly in new townships.
"We've identified the location in the Klang Valley and we hope to introduce the store next year," he told reporters during the pre-launching of Debenhams store in Penang here today.
Also present were Debenhams fashion royalty and designer Henry Holland and Phil Topham, international operations director for Debenhams.
Debenhams is one of Britain's oldest retailers.
Jackson said Penang was chosen as the third location for expansion in the Malaysian retail market as the region was a fast-growing economy.
He said Malaysia offered huge opportunities for retail market especially in the south such as in Melaka and Iskandar Malaysia township in Johor.
"Our plan is to open eight stores in Malaysia over the next 10 years as in every single year, we've been performing better than the year before," he said.
Stellar Retail had earlier invested about RM9 million in the other two Debenhams' stores in Kuala Lumpur at The Curve and Starhill Gallery, respectively.
Jackson said that it took about three months for the group to complete the RM4 million store in Penang, the first store in Malaysia, to incorporate medial players and TV screens to make interactive shopping experience for customers.
He said Debenhams aims to firmly establish itself in the Penang retail market in a further step towards expanding the brand throughout Malaysia.
Debenhams Penang will open its doors to the public tomorrow and the first lucky shopper between 10am and 2pm stands to win a return air ticket to London with a RM2,500 shopping spree at the famous flagship Debenhams store in Oxford Street.
Debenhams, one of the leading British department store chains, operates 240 stores across 28 countries from Iran to Iceland and Malta to Malaysia.
Debenhams is the 11th biggest UK online retailer by traffic volume and in March 2013, it was awarded "International Growth Initiative of The Year" and the "Retail Technology Initiative of the year for Endless Aisle" at the Oracle Retail Week Awards.-- Bernama
