Viking tyres set to boost Continental's mart share
SUBANG: Continental Tyres PJ Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTPJ) expects to capture about a third of Malaysia's tyre market with the launch of Viking tyres.
The company hopes the tyres, which have special features that can provide better vehicle performance, will attract 500,000 orders by the end of the year.
"We have already received 100,000 orders for the Viking tyres since we launched the multi-digital marketing campaign in August this year and that amount translates to about 30 per cent of our target," said Continental Tyre Technology Centre Malaysia Sdn Bhd's tyre development (Asia) manager See Chin Boon. Also present was CTPJ chief executive officer Benoit Henry and CTPJ sales and marketing director Sim Wee Chung.
Viking tyres originated from Norway 70 years ago and the Malaysian debut marked its second entry into the Asean market since tapping into China last year.
The specifications of the two Viking tyre patterns brought here, the CityTech 5 (CT5) and the ProTech 5 (PT5), have been tweaked to fit the local climate and conditions.
"The CT5 comes within the 12- to 15-inch range and targets the smaller cars like the Kancil and Viva while the PT5, which carries the 15- to 18-inch range, targets mid- to mid-high vehicles. We are targeting young executives as our primary customers for both ranges," See said.
There are currently five Viking tyre service centres across the Klang Valley and Alor Setar and five more slated by the end of the year.
"We produce about three million tyres per annum across our primary brands - Continental and Dunlop tyres - in our Alor Setar factory. We expect the addition of Viking to contribute significantly to that number," See said at the launch here yesterday.
