The Volvo XC60 crossover, dubbed by its Swedish maker as the safest and most stunning Volvo ever produced, has made its debut in Malaysia.

With the XC60, Volvo is introducing City Safety, a world's first unique safety technology to help avoid low-speed collisions in city traffic.

In an impending collision, City Safety automatically slows the XC60 to avoid a collision entirely or reduces the impact, to avoid serious injury, Volvo Car Malaysia Sdn Bhd (VCM) officials said.

"This is the future of Volvo cars," VCM president Robert Norrman said at the XC60 launch in Subang yesterday.

"The XC60's safety features are equally stunning. The XC60 is a result of Volvo's accumulated knowledge and research in automotive safety of over 80 years," he added.

The XC60 is a best-seller not only in Sweden or Europe, but around the world.

"In fact, due to the fantastic reception of the car, we are facing a worldwide shortage due to the demand which is beyond our expectations," said Norrman.

For the Malaysian market, VCM has brought in two fully-imported variants of the XC60.

The XC60 T6 LE sells at RM360,000 (without insurance) and RM330,000 exclusive of insurance for the XC60 T6 SE.

The two variants are fitted with all-wheel drive (AWD) with instant traction as standard, besides the City Safety feature.

Norrman said City Safety is another example of Volvo's leadership in automotive safety, similar to the three-point safety belt used in all cars today.

"Fifty years ago, Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt. From 1959 to this very day, the three-point safety belt is the single most effective lifesaver on the roads," he said.

Car buyers can view the new car at all Volvo showrooms nationwide from today.
